project
In the past few years, social media has become the leading app for consuming content and news about what is happening worldwide, especially for young people. At Keshet Digital, we want to create something new for the young generation: an app that combines social media's fun and ease with good, trustworthy content that only Keshet and N12 can do.

V1 is a short-form video app for news, such as celebs, food, tech, and more. It's like TikTok, but only for news. The only thing here is that our experienced news reporter creates the videos rather than the users. In addition, the team wants to make this app look very different from other apps. We created a tabloid design with pretty short titles, so the videos will tell the whole story. As a UX Designer, I was responsible for the entire user experience in this app. In just 4 months, the app got 1 million downloads on the app stores and 100K daily users!

The Research and Design process
We had little time to work on this project (only 4 months). In the beginning, I researched different kinds of layouts. Most apps look the same, so we design wireframes like traditional ones. At some point, we saw a reference that was very unique and very unpopular. The management liked this reference, so we had to go with it—a tabloid design like a newspaper with big images and big and concise titles. In the meantime, I designed the player - the heart of the app. The player is similar to what we know from TikTok and Instagram reels. Based on research that Bezeq did about internet consumption, most of our target audience (20-40) use Instagram reels, so we did the behavior like Instagram.
User Testing
I created a prototype of the app that includes the home page and 9 different video feeds. We tested the app on 16 participants aged 18-35. Most comments were on a very big and confusing home page, with unexpected big titles. The player worked very well and more (I can tell more in a private meeting). We made many changes after the user testing but still had the tabloid design.

The story didn't even start yet!
Within a month of launching the application, more than 300 thousand Israelis downloaded the app, and more than 40 thousand use it daily. In 4 months 1 Million users download the app and 100K users are using V1 daily.
In addition, during the launch, I planned a strategy that would create retention with the help of push notifications. Thanks to this strategy and great content, the app has 2.5%-3% CTR on average.
This project was exciting to work on. This kind of app is new in Israel and maybe in the world (only 1 app does similar work in France). This might be the future of news apps, and I'm very interested to see what people will think.
What's Next?
We are currently working on adding more request features and improving the app to make the experience even better.
